Treated Lumber

Hartje Lumber carries pressure treated wood in a wide variety of dimensions to meet your needs. We offer two types of treated lumber, CCA and MCA. The end use of the wood will determine which type is appropriate for your project.

CCA Treated Lumber

Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) is a chemical wood preservative containing chromium, copper and arsenic. CCA is used in pressure treated wood to protect wood from rotting due to insects and microbial agents. The Environmental Protection Agency has classified CCA as a restricted use product.

CCA has been used to pressure treat lumber since the 1940s. Since the 1970s, the majority of the wood used in outdoor residential settings has been CCA-treated wood. Pressure treated wood containing CCA is no longer being sold for use in most residential settings, including decks and playsets where frequent skin contact is likely. Primary uses for which Hartje Lumber sells CCA-treated wood includes pole barns/sheds and laminating columns.

MCA Treated Lumber

Micronized Copper Azole (MCA) is the latest generation wood preservative systems in which very small (sub-micron) particles of solid copper are suspended in a liquid carrier and pressure injected into wood, thereby eliminating the need to dissolve the copper as is done in traditional copper-based preservatives. The use of solid copper particles, rather than dissolved copper, results in a number of improved characteristics of the treated wood. These wood preservatives are designed for long-term performance in both indoor and outdoor applications. Comprehensive laboratory and extended field testing have confirmed the effectiveness of micronized copper preservatives in protecting wood against fungal decay and termite attack. MCA treated lumber is clean, odorless, and non-irritating to humans, animals and plants and is frequently used for decks, playground equipment, picnic tables, etc. Proper care must still be exercised in handling during construction and disposal as well as caution in using treated wood products near sources of drinking water.
